Corning's Multipurpose Enclosure (MPE) is a multifunctional in-line closure designed for use in outside plant fiber access networks.
The OptiSheath® Multipurpose Enclosure 1X(1X8) Splitter/MiniModule, 6X Trays, with 16 single fibre OptiTap™ connectors (Part number: U3-8DDG-8DDG-6-1108-FW-WW) from Corning is a Fiber Termination Boxes that allow connection between multiple operators and customers.
The MPE sealed terminal has the added advantage of serving as a splice point where higher fiber count distribution cables can be branched to lower fiber count cables or to the stubbed cables of multiport terminals. Optical splitters can also be housed inside this terminal, which is particularly appropriate for distributed split PON architectures. The closure can be deployed in underground chambers, wall mounted on buildings, direct buried, or aerially installed on poles or messenger wires. Individual customer connections are achieved using OptiTap® ports located at either end of the closure body. Up to 16 ports can be accommodated, eight at either end. The terminal consists of two hinged half shells which are sealed using a reusable silicone ring and grommets. All drop ports are contained in the top half and cable entry ports in the bottom half. Fiber management inside the closure is achieved using a new simplified tray which facilitates installation time. Each tray can house a maximum of 24 splices (in a double stack) providing a maximum splice capacity for the closure of 144 splices.
IP68 is an Ingress Protection (IP) rating that indicates an electrical enclosure's ability to resist the ingress of solid objects and water. The 6 in IP68 refers to its level of protection against solid objects, while the 8 indicates protection against continuous immersion in water beyond 1 meter. This rating is commonly used in marine and underwater environments, where equipment must be able to withstand long-term exposure to water. Devices with an IP68 rating can withstand complete and continuous immersion in water, making them ideal for use in harsh environments where protection from the elements is critical.
